Religious Education

Religious Education at Plaxtol Primary School

RE explores big questions about life, to find out what people believe and what difference this makes to how they live, so that they can make sense of religion, reflecting on their own ideas and ways of living.

At Plaxtol Primary School we use the Plan Bee units of learning in Years 1-6 to cover the content required by the Kent Agreed Syllabus for RE. This reflects the fact that the religious traditions are in the main Christian whilst taking account of the teaching and practices of other principal religions in the UK. We acknowledge the right of parents to withdraw their children from RE. We aim to provide an open and inclusive curriculum which can be taught to all pupils.

There is a 2 year cycle of units in order to meet the needs of mixed age classes, where the pitch and expectations for each unit are matched to the different ages and abilities within the class. All children are assessed against KS1 and KS2 outcomes from the Kent Agreed Syllabus for RE.

We use a progression overview with defined outcomes for the end of KS1 and KS2. These outcomes are split into 3 aspects:

  1.   Knowing about and understanding religions and world views.
  2.   Expressing and communicating ideas related to religions and world views.
  3.   Gaining and deploying the skills for studying religions and world views.

Continuity and progression can be achieved when pupil have increasingly challenging opportunities to:

  1.   Appreciate the importance of religion in the lives of many people
  2.   Grow in understanding of the influence of belief on behaviour, values and attitudes.
  3.   Consider their own beliefs, values and attitudes
  4.   Consider religious perspectives on contemporary social and moral issues.

We have established community links with Plaxtol Parish Church and the vicar takes assemblies at the school. At Harvest Festival parents donate food to the Medway Food Bank which has links with the church and at Christmas we perform our annual Christmas Carol Concert there.
