Rabbit Class

Welcome to Rabbit Class!

Curriculum overview and Timetable Autumn 2024

We believe that all of our children can become fluent readers and writers. This is why we teach reading through Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Revised, which is a systematic and synthetic phonics programme. This approach ensures children build on their growing knowledge of the alphabetic code, mastering phonics to read and spell as they move through the school.

We provide a balance of child-led and adult-led experiences for all children that meet the curriculum expectations for ‘Communication and language’ and ‘Literacy.’ These include:

  • sharing high-quality stories and poems
  • learning a range of nursery rhymes and action rhymes
  • activities that develop focused listening and attention, including oral blending
  • attention to high-quality language.

Daily phonics lessons in Reception

  • Phonics is taught for up to 30 minutes a day. In Reception, this is built up from 10-minute lessons, with additional daily oral blending games, to the full-length lesson as quickly as possible. Review lessons are taught each Friday, ensuring recap of the week’s teaching to help children become fluent readers.

Please see the Parent's Guide for more information

Home Learning

10 minutes of reading per day.  Reading books are sent home twice a week (normally Tuesdays and Fridays) with the expectation that each book will be shared with an adult at home. A comment can be added to the reading records.

Phonic packs with the Little Wandle sounds we are learning that week and any tricky words are sent home on a Thursday so that they can be practised at home.

Magic Moment books are for children to add pictures or photos of special moments from home that they want to speak about during a show and tell time.  These will normally be shown on a Thursday.
