At our school, Writing is taught discretely but is meaningfully linked to the wider curriculum when a high-quality text can enrich children's learning. We use Talk for Writing to engage pupils and to scaffold and develop their writing skills. The Talk for Writing approach promotes a love of language through games and drama, while also supporting pupils in planning and structuring both fiction and non-fiction texts.
From Year 2 onwards, children are taught to write using cursive handwriting. Across the school, we use a dyslexia-friendly handwriting font that is clearly displayed in all classrooms to support consistency and accessibility.
In Key Stages 1 and 2, pupils follow the Spelling Shed programme, which provides tailored spelling lists, interactive games, and challenges that reinforce spelling patterns and high-frequency words from the National Curriculum. This approach supports the development of spelling skills and confidence by focusing on phonics (the relationship between sounds and written symbols) as well as morphology (spelling through understanding of word meaning and structure).
Grammar is taught discretely, with learning closely linked to the text types being studied in Writing lessons.
